Cosenza, the city

Cosenza is a vibrant city nestled in the heart of Calabria, Italy. Its historic center, with approximately 70,000 residents. However, the broader urban area boasts over 200,000 inhabitants. As the capital of the Province of Cosenza, it plays a pivotal role in the region, which itself has a population exceeding 700,000. The Cosentian spirit thrives here. The ancient town, once known as Consentia, stood as a bulwark against Hellenic influences from Ionian colonies. It witnessed the legendary Battle of Pandosia, where a small Italic army, composed of Brettii and Lucanians, triumphed over Alexander of Epirus, the uncle of Alexander the Great.
Today, Cosenza remains a cultural hub, home to the venerable Cosentian Academy—one of Italy and Europe’s oldest academies for philosophical and literary studies. The city boasts numerous museums, monuments, theaters, and libraries, preserving its rich heritage. Situated at the confluence of the historical rivers Busento and Crati, Cosenza enjoys a unique setting. The old town, crowned by its Swabian castle, descends gracefully toward the river Crati. Meanwhile, the modern city lies to the north, beyond the Busento, on level ground. Surrounded by mountains, Cosenza experiences a microclimate that dances between cold winters and hot summers.
Whether you’re drawn to its ancient history, cultural treasures, or picturesque landscapes, Cosenza invites you to explore its enchanting streets and immerse yourself in its timeless allure.
